In 2008, my husband and I completed a seven-year project, building our adobe home by hand on the north slope of the San Gabriel Mountains overlooking the western Mojave Desert. We had attended a four-day workshop with Joe Tibbets at his Solar Adobe Building School in Bosque, New Mexico, learning how to make stabilized adobe blocks and how to build walls. Back in California, working every weekend over one summer, we made 14,500 adobe blocks, using the local soil set aside during the grading of the house pad. We built the garage first and lived in the garage for two years while building the 3700-square-foot house where we live today. This book is a compete account of our seven years’ experience, with all the trials and tribulations, and not least, the utter joy of working with adobe mud!
